A top-sealing damper is frequently the better answer. Rather than opening masonry, the failed throat plate is removed or fixed open and a gasketed damper is mounted at the top of the flue, operated by a stainless cable running down to the firebox. It seals far better than a throat damper ever did, it caps the flue against rain and animals at the same time, and it is usually less disruptive than a throat replacement.

Rust Is Evidence

A badly corroded damper is not just a broken part — cast iron in a chimney rusts because water is reaching it, and water reaching the throat means it is coming down the flue. That points to a missing cap, a cracked crown, or a failed chase cover.
