Repointing and Tuckpointing Are Not the Same Thing
The two words get used interchangeably by most homeowners and by plenty of contractors, so it is worth being precise about what you are buying.
Repointing is the structural work: the deteriorated mortar is ground or raked out to a consistent depth, and fresh mortar is packed into the joint and tooled to match the original profile. This is what actually restores the chimney’s ability to shed water and hold together.
Tuckpointing is a finishing technique layered on top of repointing, in which two contrasting mortar colors are used to create the appearance of a crisp, uniform joint line — historically to make irregular brickwork read as fine, tight-jointed masonry.

How to Tell Your Joints Have Failed
Mortar is designed to wear out before the brick does, so joint erosion is expected on any chimney past a certain age. The question is how far it has gone.
- You can scratch mortar out of a joint with a key or a screwdriver and it comes away as sand.
- Joints have receded more than about a quarter inch behind the face of the brick.
- There are gaps you can see daylight or sky through from the attic or from the roof.
- Sand and mortar crumbs collect on the roof shingles or in the gutter directly below the stack.
- White chalky staining — efflorescence — is tracking down the brick, which means water is moving through the masonry and carrying salts out with it.
Caught at the joint stage, this is a contained job. Left alone, water entering the open joints saturates the brick, and the next hard freeze begins breaking brick faces instead — at which point the repair becomes a rebuild.
Matching Mortar to Your Brick
This is the part of repointing that gets done wrong most often, and the failure is invisible for the first couple of winters.
Mortar must be softer than the masonry unit it surrounds. When brick and mortar are wet and the temperature drops, the assembly moves. If the mortar is the weaker element, it takes the stress and cracks — cheap to redo. If the mortar is harder than the brick, the brick takes the stress instead, and the face of the brick fractures off.

For the great majority of High Point chimneys — and for essentially every chimney on a pre-war house — Type N is the correct specification. A crew that repoints an older stack with Type S because it is “stronger” has quietly guaranteed a spalling problem.

Our Repointing Process
Joints are cut out to a depth of roughly two and a half times the joint width — deep enough for the new mortar to key in and hold, not so deep that the wall is destabilized. We cut with hand tools and grinders sized to the joint so the brick edges are not chewed up, which is the tell of a rushed repointing job.
The joint is cleaned and dampened before packing, because dry brick pulls water out of fresh mortar and prevents it from curing properly. Mortar goes in in layers rather than one deep pass, and each layer is allowed to set before the next. Once the joint is full, it is tooled to match the original profile — concave, weathered, or flush — because the tooled shape determines how the joint sheds water for the next few decades.
