Oak Ridge is a town of roughly 7,500 in northwestern Guilford County, about fifteen miles northwest of downtown Greensboro. Oak Ridge Military Academy, founded in the mid-nineteenth century, anchors the town center and is among the older institutions of its kind in the state.

The town has developed as a low-density, large-lot community, and the housing reflects that: substantial homes on acreage, many built in the last three decades, with correspondingly substantial chimneys.

Larger Chimneys, Different Requirements

A wide chimney is not simply a bigger version of a narrow one. Several requirements come into play past a certain size that do not apply to a modest stack.

Crickets. A cricket is a small peaked structure built on the upslope side of a chimney to divert water around it. On any chimney more than about 30 inches wide across the roof slope — which describes most of what we work on in Oak Ridge — the absence of a cricket is a defect, not an option. Without one, the upslope face acts as a dam, collecting water, ice, and leaf debris against the masonry and holding it there. We find missing crickets regularly on homes where the builder skipped them, and it is one of the more common root causes of a chronic chimney leak on a large house.

Multi-flue crowns. Larger homes commonly have chimneys carrying two, three, or four flues. The crown spanning between them has the largest unsupported area and takes weather from every direction, so it cracks first. Once it does, water enters between the flues and works down into the core of the stack.

Custom cap work. Multiple flues on one crown are best handled with a single multi-flue enclosure sized to the crown, which has the additional benefit of shielding the crown itself from direct rain. Off-the-shelf caps rarely fit these configurations, so they get fabricated to measurement.

Shoulder detailing. Wide chimneys usually narrow from a broad base to a slimmer stack, and the sloped masonry shoulders at that transition are a frequent leak point when they were built too flat to shed water.

Exposure on Open Lots

Oak Ridge’s large-lot character means most of these chimneys stand fully exposed, with no neighboring structure breaking the wind or the driven rain.

Full exposure accelerates every masonry failure mode. It also affects draft: wind stripping heat from an exposed flue cools the gases inside, which slows draft and increases creosote deposition in wood-burning systems. On tall chimneys serving large fireboxes, we frequently find the flue is technically adequate on paper but underperforming in practice because it runs cold.
